The short answer
Use the 5GHz band for nearby devices, plug in anything that does not move, restart the router properly, and check for a neighbour on the same channel.
- Use 5GHz for devices near the router. It is much faster but travels less far. Keep 2.4GHz for distant and low-demand devices.
- Use a cable for anything that does not move: televisions, games consoles, desktop computers. It removes them from the wireless contention entirely.
- Restart the router properly, off for thirty seconds, once in a while.
- Check the channel. In a flat or a terrace, many routers pick the same channel. A Wi-Fi analyser app shows which are congested.
- Update the router firmware, or ask the provider for a newer unit, which they will often supply free.
What will ruin it
Powerline adapters that send data over the mains vary enormously and depend on the wiring between the two sockets. They will not work through an extension lead and they are poor across different circuits.
Why it works
Wireless is a shared medium and every device takes turns. Removing the heaviest users onto cable leaves far more airtime for the things that have to be wireless.
