Acid, alkali or disinfectant

Nearly every cleaning problem is one of three types. Matching them is the whole job.

Cleaning is mostly a matter of matching the right chemistry to the right mess. Get that right and most jobs stop needing effort. Get it wrong and you either waste an afternoon or damage the thing you were cleaning.

The whole of it, in one idea

Almost every domestic cleaning problem is one of three types, and each has an opposite.

  • Mineral deposits, meaning limescale, hard-water marks and soap scum. These need acid. Vinegar is the cheap one; a proper descaler is the strong one.
  • Grease and organic soil, meaning cooking fat, body oils, food residue. These need alkali. Washing-up liquid, bicarbonate of soda, or a dedicated degreaser.
  • Germs, which is a different problem from dirt. These need a disinfectant, used for the contact time on the label.

Most of the time people reach for whatever is under the sink and scrub harder. Working out which of the three you have turns the job into a short one.

Where the damage happens

  • Acid on stone. Marble, limestone and many composite worktops etch permanently. This is the single most expensive cleaning mistake in a modern kitchen.
  • Abrasives on anything polished, lacquered or coated. It comes off and does not go back.
  • Alkali on wool and silk, which are protein fibres and are damaged by it.
  • Mixing products, which is a safety issue rather than a damage one. The full do-not-mix list is on household chemicals.
Always test on a hidden patch first. Under the sofa, an inside seam, the corner of the worktop behind the kettle. It takes thirty seconds and it is the difference between a clean surface and an expensive one.

Things worth doing in the right order

  1. Dry first, wet second. Vacuum or brush loose debris before anything wet touches it, or you turn dust into mud and grind it in.
  2. Top down. Everything you dislodge falls, so clean the shelf before the floor.
  3. Let the product work. Nearly every cleaner is designed to sit for a few minutes. That dwell time replaces the scrubbing, and skipping it is why people think a product is weak.
  4. Rinse. Residue attracts dirt, so a surface that was not rinsed gets dirty faster than one that was never cleaned.
