Find out what the worktop is made of before you clean it. Acid permanently etches marble, limestone and many composites, and it is the single most expensive cleaning mistake in a modern kitchen.
- Marble, limestone, travertine and some quartz composites: no acid, ever. That rules out vinegar, lemon, descaler and most bathroom sprays. Use washing-up liquid and water, or a cleaner sold specifically as pH neutral for stone.
- Granite: more forgiving but sealed, and acid strips the sealant.
- Laminate: fine with almost anything, but not with abrasives, which dull the finish.
- Solid wood: soapy water, wrung almost dry, and oil it when it starts to look thirsty.
- Stainless steel: wipe with the grain, not across it.
An etch mark is not a stain. The acid has dissolved the surface and left a dull patch that no cleaning will bring back. It has to be professionally polished out, which costs more than the entire contents of the cupboard under your sink.
Marble and limestone are calcium carbonate, which reacts with any acid and gives off carbon dioxide. That is the same reaction that dissolves limescale, which is also calcium carbonate, and it does not know the difference between your kettle and your worktop.
