The short answer
Tools rather than products. Good hair scissors, a decent hairdryer, real brushes and a proper razor all outperform their cheap versions. Creams mostly do not.
- Worth paying for: hairdryers with proper heat control, hair scissors, makeup brushes, a razor with a good handle, tweezers that actually meet at the tip.
- Rarely worth paying for: moisturiser, cleanser, shampoo, body lotion, most serums, and anything sold on a scent.
- Genuinely worth it occasionally: a good haircut, which is labour and skill rather than product.
- Check pharmacy ranges first. Several of the most recommended skincare products in the world sit on the bottom shelf of a British chemist.
What will ruin it
Expensive tools are only worth it if you use them regularly. A professional hairdryer used twice a year is not a saving.
Why it works
Tools are engineering and they last years, so the cost spreads. Creams are consumables made of ingredients that reached their performance ceiling decades ago, so the premium buys presentation.
