How to work out whether a product is doing anything

Tip 4015, filed under low cost beauty tips.

The short answer

Change one thing at a time and give it twelve weeks. Skin cell turnover and hair growth are slow, and almost nothing shows a real result in a fortnight.

  1. Introduce one product at a time, and nothing else new alongside it.
  2. Take a photograph at the start, in the same light, at the same time of day.
  3. Give it twelve weeks for skin, and longer for anything to do with hair growth.
  4. Photograph again in the same conditions and compare, rather than relying on memory.
  5. Stop it and see. If nothing changes when you stop, it was not doing anything.
What will ruin it

Introducing a full new routine at once makes it impossible to tell what helped and impossible to identify what caused a reaction, which is the situation most people end up in.

Why it works

Skin renews over roughly a month, and visible change lags behind that. Any product showing a dramatic result in days is doing something temporary, usually hydration or light reflection.
