The short answer
Go through three months of statements line by line and cancel everything you cannot immediately justify. Then set a calendar reminder for every renewal date.
- Three months of statements, every line, including small amounts.
- Cancel anything you did not remember paying for. If you miss it, resubscribing takes two minutes.
- Note every renewal date in a calendar with a reminder a fortnight before.
- Rotate rather than stack streaming services: one at a time, cancelled when you have watched what you wanted.
- Check for duplicates. Two cloud storage plans, two music services, overlapping insurance and breakdown cover are all common.
What will ruin it
Cancelling a card does not cancel a continuous payment authority, and the payments can continue against the replacement card. Cancel with the provider, and if that fails your bank must stop a continuous payment authority if you tell it to.
Why it works
Subscriptions are designed around inertia. The business model assumes a proportion of customers will not notice, and the defence is a periodic review rather than good intentions.
