How to get a better broadband or mobile deal

Tip 2020, filed under bills and switching tips.

The short answer

Wait until the contract ends, then ring and say you are leaving. Out-of-contract prices are typically far higher than new customer prices for the same service.

  1. Find your contract end date, which is on the bill or in the account area.
  2. Check what new customers pay for the same package.
  3. Ring the retentions or cancellation line, not general customer service, and say you are thinking of leaving.
  4. Have the competing price ready and be willing to actually switch.
  5. Check whether you need the speed you are paying for. Most households do not need the fastest tier available.
What will ruin it

Mid-contract price rises are legal and common. Check whether your contract has an annual increase clause, and what it is linked to, before signing anything.

Why it works

Acquisition budgets are larger than retention budgets, so the best price is nearly always offered to somebody who is leaving or arriving. Staying quietly is the one behaviour that is never rewarded.
