How to stop clothes coming out creased

Tip 1018, filed under laundry tips.

The short answer

Take them out the moment the cycle ends, shake each item hard, and hang it immediately. Creases are set by clothes sitting compressed and damp in a drum.

  1. Do not leave the load sitting. Ten minutes is fine, an hour is not, and overnight guarantees ironing.
  2. Use a lower spin speed on shirts and anything in linen. A 1400rpm spin wrings creases in that a 800rpm spin does not.
  3. Shake each item out hard before hanging.
  4. Hang shirts on hangers straight from the machine, buttoned at the collar.
What will ruin it

A tumble dryer left to cool with the clothes inside puts every crease back. If you cannot unload it immediately, use the anti-crease or cool-tumble setting.

Why it works

Cotton fibres hold whatever shape they are in as they dry. Damp and compressed under the weight of the rest of the load is precisely the wrong shape.

Household chemicals can be dangerous in combination. Never mix them, keep the room ventilated, and test anything on a hidden patch first. Full disclaimer.
