Do onions in the room cure a cold

Tip 3005, filed under home remedy tips.

The short answer

No. Nothing cures a cold, including vitamin C, echinacea, onions in a bowl and the various things that circulate on social media every winter.

What does actually help:

  • Rest, fluids and time. A cold lasts about a week whatever you do.
  • Painkillers for the aches and the sore throat.
  • Steam and saline for the congestion.
  • Honey for the cough.

What does not:

  • Vitamin C does not prevent colds in the general population and shortens them by an amount too small to notice.
  • Antibiotics do nothing to a virus and should not be requested for one.
  • Onions in a bowl, garlic necklaces and the rest are folklore with no mechanism.
What will ruin it

See a doctor if a cold comes with chest pain, breathlessness, a very high temperature that will not come down, confusion, or symptoms that get worse after improving, which can indicate a secondary infection.

Why it works

A cold is a viral infection that your immune system clears over roughly a week. Nothing available over a counter shortens that meaningfully, which is why almost every remedy is aimed at symptoms rather than at the illness.
