How to make the morning routine less of a fight

Tip 3022, filed under tips for children.

The short answer

Move everything that can be done the night before to the night before, and give children a visual sequence they can follow without being told each step.

  1. The night before: clothes out, bags packed by the door, lunches made, forms signed.
  2. A picture list of the morning sequence on the wall for younger children. They follow a chart far better than repeated instructions.
  3. Get up fifteen minutes before they do. Almost every difficult morning is one where the adult is also rushing.
  4. One thing at a time, in order, rather than a list of five instructions at once.
  5. Breakfast somewhere they cannot see a screen.
What will ruin it

Beware making the chart itself into another thing to enforce. It works when the child is following the chart instead of you, and stops working the moment it becomes something you nag about.

Why it works

Young children hold very little in working memory and lose track of multi-step instructions. An external sequence removes the need to remember and removes the adult from the loop, which is where most of the friction is.
