How to get cheaper car insurance legally

Tip 7014, filed under cheaper motoring tips.

The short answer

Shop around three to four weeks before renewal, pay annually rather than monthly, and check whether a slightly higher voluntary excess or a black box policy helps.

  1. Never auto-renew. Quote around three to four weeks before the renewal date.
  2. Pay annually if you can. Monthly payment is credit, frequently at a high effective interest rate.
  3. Check your job description wording. Different but accurate descriptions of the same job sometimes price differently, and the one you choose must be truthful.
  4. Consider a higher voluntary excess, but only an amount you could actually pay.
  5. Add an experienced named driver if they genuinely drive the car.
  6. Telematics is often much cheaper for young drivers.
What will ruin it

Never misstate your job, your address, your mileage or who the main driver is. "Fronting", where a parent is named as the main driver of a car actually driven by a child, is fraud. It voids the policy at the moment you need it and it is a criminal offence.

Why it works

Insurance pricing is statistical and the same risk is scored differently by different insurers. Shopping around works because you are finding the insurer whose model happens to rate you most favourably, and that insurer changes year to year.
