Tipking has been publishing household tips since 2000. It went quiet for a while. This is it running again.
What it is
A tips site, which is what the name says and what the original was: short, specific, individually useful tips, filed by subject so you can actually find one.
Every tip is built the same way. The short answer first, because most people want one line. Then the method. Then what will ruin it, because the expensive mistake is usually the thing nobody mentions. Then why it works, because the reasoning is what lets you solve the next problem on your own.
Why there are calculators
Most household questions now get answered by Google itself, above the results, with the links underneath belonging to Persil, Dyson, Hotpoint and EDF.
We checked that properly rather than assuming it. In September 2026 we ran 327 live UK searches across every section of this site: 87 per cent returned an answer from Google above the results, including every "how much does it cost to run" query we tried. An earlier version of this page claimed running costs were the exception. They are not, and saying so here is cheaper than being caught out later.
What a general answer still cannot do is use your rate, your appliance and your usage. So the calculators stay, for that reason rather than the one we first gave, and every one of them shows its arithmetic instead of handing you a number to trust. And the figures behind them are published as open data, because being the source outlasts competing to be the answer.

Written and edited by Sam Allcock, publisher and editor. Every energy figure comes from the Ofgem price cap with the rate and the date on the page. We do not review products we have not tested. What the site will and will not tell you is set out in the disclaimer, which is worth reading if you are about to follow a tip about gas, electricity, chemicals or health.
